Medical Coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedure, medical services and equipment used into alphanumeric codes. These codes are taken from medical records or physician's notes. These codes should be applied correctly during medical billing process as they are important for payment purposes. Medical billers uses the derived codes and send them to insurance companies to claim insurance for payment purposes.
Medical Coders uses a set of previously assigned codes for coding purpose, which includes ICD, CPT and HCPCS Codes. ICD Codes or International Classification of Diseases are set of codes published and managed by WHO. These codes contains diagnosis of a patient, the signs and symptoms, causes for illness and death. For instance ICD code, B56.9 denotes African Trypanosomiasis.
African Trypanosomiasis also known as "sleeping sickness" is caused by microscopic parasites of the species Trypanosoma brucei. It is transmitted by the tsetse fly, which is found only in sub-Saharan Africa.
